Chantix Lawsuits Could Damage Pfizer’s Reputation
An article published on the 4th of April, 2012, on seekingalpha.com by a financial analyst suggested that lawsuits related to attempted suicide after taking Chantix and other side effects of the popular smoking cessation medication could have a serious impact on the reputation of drug maker Pfizer, one of the biggest pharmaceuticals manufacturers in the world. Chantix is a smoking cessation medication that has even linked to a number of serious psychological side effects, including depression and suicide. Side effects can also include heart attack, cardiovascular problems, blackouts, and Stevens-Johnson Syndrome.
Thousands in Chantix lawsuits
Pfizer’s overall fiscal performance was praised in the seekingalpha.com article by the financial analyst author, and investors were encouraged to watch the company as discussions of a split continue. However, the author warned that the thousands of lawsuits that are currently pending against the pharmaceuticals manufacturer could taint the reputation of the pharmaceuticals giant. More than 2,400 people have hired a lawyer to take legal action against drug maker Pfizer by filing Chantix lawsuits, and this could have a significant impact on the company.
Most lawsuits claim that Pfizer did not adequately warn patients about the potential side effects after taking Chantix. They say that the company did not warn them of the possibility of suicide or heart attack, both serious side effects that can have a significant impact on a patient’s life. The reason for the link between the drug and suicide is unclear, but the Food and Drug Administration noted nearly 300 reports of suicide and depression related to Chantix in one 18-month period.
Chantix lawsuits consolidated in MDL
Chantix lawsuits have been consolidated in a multidistrict litigation case that is currently taking place in the Northern District of Alabama. This will help coordinate similar cases regarding side effects of the same medication. Plaintiffs involved in this litigation are seeking Chantix settlements and punitive damages for the side effects they experienced after taking the drug.
